NEWARK, N.J. – Four Pioneers were in double digits in scoring as the William Paterson women's basketball team (13-9, 9-6 NJAC) earned a 61-51 victory at Rutgers-Newark (7-15, 3-12 NJAC) Feb. 6.
Sophomore guard
Jackie Rodriguez (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) scored a team-best 15 points, adding seven rebounds and five assists. Sophomore forward
Tori Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) had 14 tallies and seven boards, senior guard
Brittany Harden (Millville, N.J./Sacred Heart) collected 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists, and senior forward
Alex Milne (Howell, N.J./Howell) finished with 11 tallies and a game-high 11 boards.
WP jumped out to a 19-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and a 33-25 edge at halftime. When the Scarlet Raiders cut it to five (42-37) less than 30 seconds before the end of the third period, the Pioneers started the fourth with an 8-2 burst (50-39, 6:41) behind a pair of Rodriguez three-pointers.
William Paterson owned a 49-32 rebounding advantage and shot 43.1 (22-51) percent from the floor while limiting Rutgers-Newark to a 19-for-66 (.288) effort.
Junior guard Maria Simmons posted 25 points and six rebounds, while senior guard Arianna Williams had 11 tallies and seven boards, for the Scarlet Raiders.
William Paterson will host Kean Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 6:00 p.m. The Pioneers will honor their female student-athletes at halftime as part of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day festivities.
