The winner will advance to play at second-seeded Stockton (19-6, 14-4 NJAC) Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 7:00 p.m. in the semifinal round. In the other first-round game Feb. 20, fourth-seeded Ramapo (16-9, 12-6 NJAC) will host fifth-seeded The College of New Jersey (14-11, 9-9 NJAC) at 6:00 p.m. The winner will play at top-seeded New Jersey City (18-7, 15-3 NJAC) Feb. 24 at 7:00 p.m. The highest remaining seed will host the championship game Saturday, Feb. 27, at a time to be determined.
The Pioneers are coming off an 85-65 victory Feb. 17 at Rowan (9-16, 6-12 NJAC). Earlier this season, WP suffered a 78-65 home loss to Rutgers-Newark (Jan. 9) and a 74-58 defeat at Newark (Feb. 6).
The 2015 NJAC Defensive Player of the Year, senior 6-4 guard
Bright Mensah (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) leads WP with 21.7 points (first in league, 26th in DIII), 2.9 assists (ninth in conference) and 2.3 steals (second in league, 29th nationally) per contest. Senior 6-6 guard
Terik Bridgeman (Harlem, N.Y./Nia Prep) is adding 15.7 tallies and a team-best 8.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocked shots per game, while junior 5-9 guard
Zach Frick (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) is posting 10.0 points per contest while making 2.2 three-pointers per game (fourth in NJAC). Junior 6-2 forward
Richy Espinal (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) is adding 9.6 tallies and 6.2 boards per game.
William Paterson is looking to win its 12th NJAC Men's Basketball Tournament title (1972, 1980, 1983, 1984, 1985, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2012) and is making its 25th NJAC Tournament appearance (1972, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016).
WP was 21-8 overall and 13-5 in conference play a year ago, reaching the NJAC Tournament final and NCAA Tournament second round.
