Women’s Basketball Drops 86-71 Decision to Stockton

Pioneers Led by Harris’ 20 Points

WAYNE, N.J. – Stockton (7-1, 4-1) pulled away from William Paterson (4-5, 2-3 NJAC) during the fourth quarter for an 86-71 women's basketball victory Dec. 10.
 
The Pioneers scored 12 of the game's first 15 points to jump out to a 25-17 lead by the end of the first quarter, and were ahead by as many as 10 during the second period en route to a 44-38 halftime advantage. Sophomore guard Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) scored 12 first-half points and freshman guard Gabby Harris (South River, N.J./South River) added 10.
 
Back-to-back buckets by junior guard Lea Mendolla handed the Ospreys a 55-53 edge with 4:19 to play in the third quarter, and Stockton headed into the final period with a 58-57 lead. The Ospreys then scored the first six points of the fourth quarter (67-59, 8:08), and a later 12-2 burst extended it to an 84-67 advantage with 1:23 left.
 
Harris finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Rovito had 15 tallies, seven boards, four assists and seven steals, while junior forward Tori Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) collected 15 points and tied with senior forward Janea Clark (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) for the game high of nine rebounds.
 
Junior forward Najha Treadwell posted 25 points and five rebounds for Stockton. Mendolla chipped in 17 tallies and five boards.
 
The Ospreys were 18-for-30 (.600) from the field during the second half and 30-for-57 (.526) overall. WP owned a 47-32 rebounding advantage and a 27-13 edge in second-chance points.
 
William Paterson will have a break for final exams, resuming competition Wednesday, Dec. 21, at home against Staten Island at 6:00 p.m.
