POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Trailing by seven with 4:05 to play, freshman guard
Gabby Harris (South River, N.J./South River) capped a furious comeback with her go-ahead bucket during the waning seconds for a 64-62 William Paterson (3-2) women's basketball victory at Vassar (2-3) Nov. 28.
The Pioneers were behind by 10 early in the third quarter (37-27, 7:46), but pulled to within one at 44-43 by the end of the period. Freshman guard
Kristina Ulrich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) leveled the score, 46-46, with a three-pointer at the 8:20 mark of the fourth, but the Brewers reeled off seven unanswered points to surge ahead by a 53-46 margin three minutes later.
Junior forward
Tori Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) knocked down a layup (53-48, 5:02), and she came up with a steal on the next Vassar possession. Harris was fouled and made the first of two free throws with 4:21 left, and after a Brewer three-pointer 16 seconds later, senior guard
Nikole Williams (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) drained a jumper and Harris pulled down a defensive rebound and drilled a three for a 56-54 game with 3:06 on the clock.
After misses by both teams, sophomore guard Nicole Teta made it a two-possession game with a layup at the 2:06 mark, but sophomore guard
Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) answered with two free throws with 1:54 left.
Woetzel forced a turnover during Vassar's next possession and got the ball to Harris, who tied the game at 58-58 with her layup with 1:33 on the clock. A Williams rebound led to Woetzel's go-ahead layup 40 seconds later, and a 1-for-2 Vassar trip to the charity stripe and two Rovito free throws left it a 62-59 WP lead with 29 seconds remaining.
Freshman guard Isa Peczuh connected on a three-pointer, tying the game at 62-62 six seconds later. Harris had the ball near the top of the key as time dwindled down, picking her way until she drove down the left side of the paint and sliced between two defenders. She scooped a left-handed shot off the backboard and rattled it in to push WP ahead by a 64-62 count with three seconds left. The Brewers attempted an off-balance shot in traffic from a step inside the arc, hitting the back of the rim just before time expired.
Vassar led by as many as 15 during the first half but the Pioneers closed to six by halftime, 31-25.
Harris led WP with 15 points, while Rovito had nine tallies and four rebounds from off the bench. Williams added eight points and six boards.
Junior guard/forward Ariella Rosenthal paced the Brewers with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
William Paterson will host New Jersey City Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 6:00 p.m.
