Women’s Basketball Drops 55-52 Overtime Decision

Pioneers Lose to Haverford in DeSales Tournament Consolation Game

CENTER VALLEY, PA. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (1-2) dropped a 55-52 overtime decision to Haverford (1-2) Nov. 20 in the DeSales Morgan Stanley Tip-Off Tournament consolation game.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 13-5 lead less than eight minutes into the contest, and went into the locker room with a 26-23 edge behind seven first-half points from freshman guard Gabby Harris (South River, N.J./South River).

Two free throws by junior guard Jackie Rodriguez (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial), a bucket by senior forward Janea Clark (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) and a 1-for-2 trip to the stripe by Harris stretched it to a 37-30 margin with 3:09 remaining in the third quarter, and WP made it a double-digit game at 46-36 with 8:14 to play in regulation. The Fords responded by scoring the game's next 13 points to create a 49-46 edge less than six minutes later, their first lead since the 4:31 mark of the second quarter, but Rodriguez forced overtime with her three-pointer with 35 ticks left.

Harris scored the first basket of the extra session before Haverford put together a 7-1 burst for a 55-52 advantage with 36 seconds remaining.

Harris led William Paterson with 12 points and four assists, adding six rebounds. Clark posted eight tallies, three steals and a team-best nine boards, and sophomore guard Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team after chipping in six points and eight rebounds.

Junior forward/center Samantha Wetzel contributed 14 points and 23 rebounds for Haverford.

William Paterson will open its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) slate Tuesday, Nov. 22, at home against Ramapo at 6:00 p.m.
