RIVERDALE, N.Y. – A goal in extra time by freshman forward
Marisa Adelman (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) was the difference as second-seeded William Paterson (14-5-1) defeated third-seeded FDU-Florham (9-9-4), 2-1 in overtime, in the first round of the ECAC Women's Soccer Tournament Nov. 12 at Gaelic Park.
The Pioneers advance to the quarterfinals Sunday, Nov. 13, against host and top-seeded NYU (11-3-5), a 3-2 first-round winner against fourth-seeded Stockton (12-8-2). WP and the Violets will square off at 11:00 a.m. at Gaelic Park to decide which team moves on to the ECAC semifinals Saturday, Nov. 19.
The Devils struck first when senior midfielder Brittni Calleo worked her away around several WP defenders and fired to the far post 10:14 into the contest.
Senior back
Tori Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) provided the equalizer in the 63rd minute, knocking in a free kick by sophomore back
Darcy Perez (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield).
Adelman found the back of the net for the 19th time this season when junior back
Adrianna Oliveira (Union, N.J./Union) sent a ball into the box and Adelman got in behind the defense and beat the keeper 1v1 just 2:11 into overtime.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Angela Sandelli (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) made just one save for WP, as the Pioneers enjoyed an 18-4 shot advantage. Senior Annie George collected five stops for FDU-Florham.
