Field Hockey Nearly Upsets No. 15 Montclair State, 3-2

Shot Hits Post in Waning Seconds for Pioneers

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – A shot hit the post during the final five seconds, denying the William Paterson field hockey team (5-6, 0-2 NJAC) the equalizing goal as the Pioneers fell to visiting No. 15 Montclair State (9-3, 2-0 NJAC), 3-2, Oct. 5.

WP struck first when freshman midfielder Shannon Super (Oaklyn, N.J./Collingswood) dribbled through the middle of the circle and passed off to freshman forward Michaela Meillier (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Holy Cross), who finished at the left post for a penalty-corner goal 15:27 into the contest.

The Red Hawks evened things up in the 28th minute when a quick flurry in front of the goal resulted in a Danielle Butrico goal and Amber Haslett assist. The two connected again just 65 seconds later on a mini-breakaway that the WP goalie did not cleanly clear, allowing the ball to find its way into the left side of the cage and make it a 2-1 score.

Senior Megan Roeloffs blasted a shot from the top of the circle off a Butrico insert for a 3-1 margin in the 43rd minute.

Senior midfielder Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) put a shot high and tight to the left side of the frame, pulling the Pioneers to within one at 3-2 at the 57:37 mark.

William Paterson was awarded a corner during the closing moments, and junior forward Carly Satter's (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) attempt hit the post with three seconds left. Another penalty corner was called, but MSU was able to clear the ball to end the threat and the game.

Sophomore Mallory Rickerhauser (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) made one save for the Pioneers, and Stanton added a defensive save. Junior Kaitlin Maguire collected one Red Hawk stop and was aided by a Marissa Siconolfi defensive save.

The Pioneers will visit Stockton Saturday, Oct. 8, at 12:00 p.m.
