Women’s Soccer Celebrates Homecoming with 2-1 Double-Overtime Victory

Pioneers Defeat New Jersey City on Kristen Bowe’s Goal

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's soccer team (7-2-1, 2-2 NJAC) celebrated Homecoming with a 2-1 double-overtime victory against New Jersey City (4-4-1, 1-3 NJAC) Oct. 1.

The Pioneers were forced to play 10v11 starting in the 39th minute due to a red card, but took a 1-0 short-handed lead at the 41:06 mark when junior midfielder Lauren McHugh (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) fired from 15 yards out across the frame to the right post off an assist from junior back Adrianna Oliveira (Union, N.J./Union).

The Gothic Knights scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute thanks to a Mallensey Vargas unassisted goal as she gathered a loose ball and finished to the top shelf.

Freshman midfielder Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) got on to a loose ball, beat a defender and scored to the right side of the frame from the left side of the box for the game-winning goal 2:54 into the second extra session.

Sophomore goalkeeper Angela Sandelli (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) made two saves for WP, and junior Paula Viana posted five stops for NJCU as the Pioneers enjoyed a 17-3 shot advantage.

William Paterson will host John Jay Monday, Oct. 3, at 6:00 p.m.
