Mensah Scores 1,000th Career Point but Men’s Basketball Drops 78-65 Decision

Pioneers Fall to Rutgers-Newark

WAYNE, N.J. – Senior guard Bright Mensah (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) scored his 1,000th career point, but the William Paterson men's basketball team (7-6, 2-5 NJAC) suffered a 78-65 loss against visiting Rutgers-Newark (10-4, 5-2 NJAC) Jan. 9.
 
Mensah finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds and four steals, while junior guard Joseph Taylor (Camden, N.J./Woodrow Wilson) collected 16 tallies and three assists. Junior forward Richy Espinal (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) chipped in 11 points and five boards.
 
The Scarlet Raiders expanded a 31-24 halftime advantage to as many as 18 (53-35, 13:17) during the second half thanks to 50.0 (21-42) percent shooting from the floor and a 51-29 advantage on the boards.
 
Mensah's bucket with 5:03 remaining made him the 29th member of WP's 1,000-point club (1,008, tied-26th).
 
Senior forward Jordan McDaniel paced Rutgers-Newark with 32 points, adding nine rebounds. Senior forward David Azoroh posted 17 tallies and 11 caroms, while senior guard John Snow added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
 
William Paterson will visit York, N.Y., Monday, Jan. 11, at 7:00 p.m.
