Softball Advances in NCAA Tournament with 9-2 Victory

Second-Seeded Pioneers Eliminate Fourth-Seeded Rams

Video Highlights

UNION, N.J. – Second-seeded William Paterson (28-12-1) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating fourth-seeded Farmingdale State (22-15) 9-2 in an elimination game of the 2015 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Union (N.J.) Regional on May 9.

The Pioneers advance to play third-seeded Staten Island (31-11) in an elimination game at 4:00 p.m. The winner will then play Sunday, May 10, at 12:00 p.m. against top-seeded Kean (27-11-1).

The Pioneers burst through for five runs during the top of the first inning. Sophomore right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) led off the game with a base hit to left field and senior center fielder Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) drilled a hard grounder off the pitcher's glove for a single. Sophomore designated player Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) then followed with a grounder to the first baseman's right side, and she would have beaten the throw regardless but the toss was high, a hit and an error that allowed Nicole Fryer and Principe to score the game's first two runs. An infield single by sophomore shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) put runners on the corners and WP then attempted the double steal. Wasilak was out at second base, but Stanton scored to make it a 3-0 margin. Freshman second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) sent a double down the left-field line, and after a groundout resulted in the second out of the inning, a wild pitch and a two-bagger to left center by junior left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) plated Poretti.  Sophomore catcher Kim Fryer's (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) base hit to right and a throwing error were enough to allow Wimmershoff to touch home, and the Pioneers owned a 5-0 advantage.

William Paterson tacked on three more in the second. Nicole Fryer had a leadoff base hit through the left side and Principe sacrificed her to second, setting up a Stanton RBI-single up the middle. Wasilak added a base hit to right, and two batters later the Farmingdale State shortstop dropped an infield popup, plating two more scores to make it an 8-0 game.

Nicole Fryer doubled off the fence in straightaway center field and later scored via an error for a 9-0 count during the top of the third inning.

Farmingdale State sophomore first baseman Lori Michalowski hit a two-run home run over the center-field fence to make it a 9-2 game in the bottom of the fourth.

Nicole Fryer finished 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, and Stanton went 2-for-4 and posted an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Wasilak finished 2-for-4 and scored once.

Sophomore pitcher Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) sat down all nine batters she faced during her 3.0 innings inside the circle. Senior Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) allowed two runs on five hits over 2.1 innings, striking out two and walking one. Stanton finished off the game, pitching 1.2 innings and posting a punchout while giving up one hit (3-0).

Michalowski was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer. Senior Taylor Tedeschi gave up nine runs (six earned) on 11 hits and one walk in 3.0 innings, posting one strikeout (10-9). Classmate Taylor Webb tossed the final 4.0 hitless innings and struck out four.
