Postgame Interview

UNION, N.J. – Second-seeded William Paterson (27-12-1) suffered a 9-1 loss against third-seeded Staten Island (31-10) May 8 in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Union (N.J.) Regional.

The Pioneers will face fourth-seeded Farmingdale State (22-14) in the second round Saturday, May 9, at 1:30 p.m. at Kean. The winner will then play at 4:00 p.m. and will face the loser of Saturday's 11:00 a.m. game between CSI and top-seeded Kean (26-11-1).

The Dolphins manufactured a single run during the top of the first inning, as senior center fielder Brittany Smith singled, stole second, advanced to third on an error on the throw down, and scored when she forced a run down and beat the throw to the plate.

The Pioneers tied it up during the home half of the third. Sophomore catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by junior left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) before sophomore pitcher Allison Podmajersky's (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) base hit left runners on the corners. Sophomore right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) then dropped an RBI-single into center field, making it a 1-1 game.

CSI surged ahead with a four-run fourth. Junior third baseman Christina Tufano and junior right fielder Chyanne Gilliam singled and senior left fielder Danielle Locke was hit by a pitch to load the bases for junior shortstop Maxine Jasko, who hit a grounder to short that was thrown home to get the lead runner and the first out of the inning. Another fielder's choice was thrown home but not in time, allowing Gilliam to score. Freshman designated player Samantha Bowbliss then hit a blooper that dropped in just behind first base, and a throwing error on the play allowed a total of three runners to cross the plate and make it a 5-1 score.

A Smith base hit, a stolen base and two wild pitches made it a 6-1 margin in the fifth.

The Dolphins tacked on three more runs in the seventh. Sophomore pitcher Jacqueline Cautela and Smith started the frame with singles and a double steal, and Tufano's fielder's choice knocked in the first run. A throwing error and an RBI-double from Gilliam finished the scoring.

Nicole Fryer was 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead WP at the plate. Podmajersky allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits over 3.1 innings, striking out three (11-6). Classmate Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) surrendered six hits and four runs in 3.2 innings with two strikeouts.

Smith was 3-for-4 with four stolen bases and three runs scored for Staten Island. Cautela (16-6) gave up one run on five hits with one walk.
