Softball Eliminated from NJAC Tournament

Third-Seeded Pioneers Drop 10-4 Decision to Top-Seeded Rowan

Video Highlights

GLASSBORO, N.J. – Third-seeded William Paterson (27-11-1, 13-5 NJAC) was eliminated from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Softball Tournament May 2, suffering a 10-4 loss against top-seeded and ninth-ranked Rowan (35-5, 14-4 NJAC).

Junior shortstop Shilah Snead singled up the middle, stole second and scored on an Alysa Romero base hit to give the Profs a 1-0 edge during the bottom of the first inning.

The Pioneers answered by taking the lead in the top of the second. Sophomore pitcher Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) led off with a single up the middle and was sacrificed to second by junior left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) before she was lifted for pinch runner Zigmary Colon (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech). Freshman designated player Sam Rothenberger (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) drilled an RBI-double to right center and was replaced by pinch runner Carly Satter (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional), who later crossed the plate thanks to a triple to right-center field from sophomore right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South).

That lead was short-lived, however, as Rowan's Romero plated two runners with her base hit up the middle, making it a 3-2 score after two innings.

After WP left two runners stranded during the home half of the third, a Sara Finnegan double, groundout and Amanda Toomer RBI-single made it a 4-2 Rowan advantage during the bottom half of the same frame.

Sophomore first baseman Damariz Mercado hit a two-run homer for the Profs in the fourth, and a Romero double and Pioneer error pushed it to a 7-2 margin at the end of five innings.

Sophomore pitcher Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) opened the top of the sixth with a double to center field, and after a flyout, Rothenberger hit a two-bagger to left to drive in Stanton. Two batters later, Nicole Fryer knocked in Rothenberger with a single to left to cut the lead to 7-4.

Snead finished the scoring for Rowan with a three-run home run to center in the bottom of the sixth.

Nicole Fryer was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, and Rothenberger finished 2-for-4 and posted two doubles, a pair of RBI and a run scored.

Castelli (10-5) pitched the first 1.1 innings and gave up three runs and six hits with a strikeout and a walk. Senior Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) allowed seven hits and three runs over 2.0 innings, while Stanton surrendered four runs (three earned) and five hits in 2.2 innings, striking out one.

Snead and Romero were both 4-for-5 with three RBI. Freshman Ashley Lesch earned the win in relief (6-1), allowing two runs on six hits over 4.2 innings with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.
