Softball Sweeps Golden Eagles, 3-2 and 10-2

Pioneers Earn Victories at St. Joseph’s-Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – William Paterson (20-9) earned a 3-2, 10-2 (five innings) softball sweep at St. Joseph's-Long Island (16-14) April 16.

Game One
All five runs came in the seventh inning of the 3-2 opening decision.

Sophomore shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) doubled to left center to lead off the seventh, and freshman second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) singled her in with one out. Senior Kristen Gardner (Audubon, N.J./Methacton) followed with a pinch-hit RBI-single and was replaced on first base by sophomore catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South). Junior left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) then drew a walk, and after a flyout, sophomore right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) scored Kim Fryer with a base hit into left field.

A two-run triple during the bottom half of the frame pulled the Golden Eagles to within one with one out, but sophomore pitcher Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) got a popup and strikeout to end the game.

Five different Pioneers each had a hit, and Podmajersky (6-4) allowed two runs on four hits while registering nine strikeouts.

Four Golden Eagles accounted for St. Joseph's-Long Island's hits. Freshman Sandra Foster (1-2) gave up three runs and five hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks during the complete-game effort.

Game Two
WP jumped out to a 5-0 lead during its first at-bat and cruised to a 10-2 win in five innings.

Nicole Fryer led off the game with her second home run of the season, and senior center fielder Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) and Wasilak followed with singles. A fielder's choice and a Poretti walk left the bases loaded, and after a strikeout, sophomore pitcher Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) drilled a three-run triple to right field. Freshman third baseman Sam Rothenberger (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) then singled in Castelli to make it a 5-0 margin.

Poretti was issued a base on balls, senior catcher Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) doubled and Castelli squeezed across Poretti in the third inning. Rouse later scored on an error to extend the lead to 7-0.

A walk, passed ball, fielder's choice and sacrifice fly allowed the Golden Eagles to get onto the scoreboard during the bottom of the third.

The Pioneers added three more scores during the top of the fourth inning. Nicole Fryer walked to start the frame and scored via a Wasilak double to left-center field. Gardner singled in Wasilak, and Poretti followed with an RBI-single to left.

A Gianna Gulli solo homer finished the scoring in the bottom of the fourth.

Principe and Wasilak each had a pair of hits, and Castelli finished with four RBI. She improved to 9-4 inside the circle, allowing one run and two hits in 3.0 innings while posting five strikeouts and four walks. Sophomore Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) tossed the final 2.0 innings and gave up a run and a hit with two strikeouts.

Junior left fielder Lindsey Corriss went 2-for-2 for St. Joseph's-Long Island. Freshman starter Lauren Buturla surrendered five runs and five hits over 2.0 innings, registering two strikeouts and a walk.
