Wimmershoff, Podmajersky Help Softball Get Key Sweep

Pioneers Defeat NJAC Foe Rutgers-Camden, 5-0 and 3-0

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – Junior left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) hit her second grand slam in five days and sophomore pitcher Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) tossed a one-hitter as William Paterson (22-9-1, 9-5 NJAC) secured a critical pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) softball victories against Rutgers-Camden (17-11-1, 7-7 NJAC), 5-0 and 3-0, on Senior Day April 18.

With the victories, the Pioneers finished the day in fourth place in the league standings with four regular-season conference games remaining. The top six teams will qualify for the NJAC Tournament that begins April 28.

Game One
Wimmershoff's grand slam allowed the Pioneers to start the day with a 5-0 win.

Sophomore shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) singled to left to start the home half of the fourth, and senior catcher Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) then placed a bunt perfectly to the pitcher's right side for a base hit. Sophomore pinch hitter Zigmary Colon (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) bunted back to the pitcher, who looked to see if she could get one of the existing base runners out before finally deciding to throw to first, and the speedy Colon beat the throw for a fielder's choice that loaded the bases. A grounder allowed the Scarlet Raptors to record the first out of the inning at home plate, and a strikeout then brought Wimmershoff to the plate. She drilled a home run deep to left, and WP owned a 4-0 lead.

Senior center fielder Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) hit a one-out triple to right-center field and Wasilak knocked an RBI-single into right for a 5-0 score in the fifth.

Principe and Wasilak both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Senior pitcher Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) pitched the complete-game shutout (4-1), striking out six and walking two while allowing a pair of hits.

Junior Brittany Scott fell to 13-9 for Rutgers-Camden, giving up five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and a base on balls.

Game Two
WP scored all three of its runs during its first at-bat, finishing the sweep with a 3-0 win.

Sophomore right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) started the bottom of the first with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Principe. Wasilak then singled up the middle to plate Nicole Fryer, and Rouse drove in Wasilak with a base hit to right center. Following a Wimmershoff single, senior designated player Keanna Ross (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) knocked in Rouse with an RBI-single to center.

Ross was 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Pioneers. Podmajersky (7-4) only allowed one hit from inside the circle, a fourth-inning infield single, and finished with seven strikeouts.

Scott (13-10) surrendered seven hits and three runs, posting two strikeouts and a pair of walks.

After the doubleheader, the Pioneers honored their seven seniors – Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.), Dys, Kristen Gardner (Audubon, N.J./Methacton), Principe, Ross, Rouse and Melissa Swain (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI). WP also held its Strike Out Cancer event in conjunction with the Scarlet Raptors, raising funds for the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

William Paterson will play a twin bill at No. 9 Rowan Tuesday, April 21, at 3:00 p.m.
