Hoagland’s 10-RBI Day Leads Baseball to 16-1 Win at Stevens

Freshman Has Grand Slam as Part of 5-for-5 Day

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Freshman first baseman Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) posted a school-record 10 runs-batted-in and crossed the plate four times himself, leading William Paterson (11-2) to a 16-1 baseball victory at Stevens (7-6) March 25.

Hoagland was 5-for-5 at the plate, hitting a grand slam, a three-run homer and two doubles. His 10 RBI tied for the ninth-best single-game effort in Division III history.

Sophomore center fielder Mike Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) started the game with an infield single and junior left fielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) walked, followed by a Hoagland run-scoring double to right. Junior designated hitter Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) and junior shortstop Victor Sanchez (Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) added RBI-groundouts for a quick 3-0 advantage.

Sophomore third baseman Zeph Walters hit a solo shot to right center to get the Ducks on the scoreboard during the bottom of the first inning.

Freshman third baseman Rob Eggert (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) reached on an error in the top of the fifth and Abate was hit by a pitch. Hoagland cleared the bases with his two-out homer to right center for a 6-1 score.

Walks issued to graduate student right fielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange), Sanchez and junior second baseman Justin Ferreira (Elmwood Park, N.J./Elmwood Park Memorial) loaded the bases to open the sixth inning. Two strikeouts were followed by a base on balls issued to Abate to force across Flores, and Garguilo was hit by a pitch to plate Sanchez. Hoagland once again cleared the bases, this time with a grand slam to right-center field, and the Pioneers owned a 12-1 lead.

Eggert's single and an error on a batted ball from Abate led to an eighth-inning RBI-double for sophomore pinch hitter Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove). Hoagland's ground-rule double scored two more runs, and a later run-scoring groundout by Sanchez pushed across Hoagland to make it a 16-1 game.

Flores finished 2-for-4 with a double and run scored. Freshman Mario Danza (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Twp.) improved to 2-0 with 6.0 innings of one-run ball, striking out four and walking two while scattering four hits. Senior Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) tossed 3.0 hitless innings of relief with four strikeouts and three walks for his first save.

Walters went 2-for-3 with a solo home run for the Ducks. Starter Peirce Marston took the loss (1-1), giving up five hits and six runs (three earned) over 5.0 innings with three strikeouts and a walk.

William Paterson will host Farmingdale State Thursday, March 26, at 3:30 p.m.
