Baseball Falls to No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater

Pioneers Suffer 22-1 Loss Against Defending National Champs

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – The William Paterson baseball team (8-2) dropped a 22-1, seven-inning decision to No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-0) March 20 at the Central Florida Invitational.
 
After a scoreless first inning, the Warhawks posted eight runs in the second, including a three-run home run by second baseman Nick Kuhlmann.
 
Junior right fielder Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) led off the bottom of the second with a solo shot to left field to get the Pioneers on the scoreboard.
 
The defending national champions added five third-inning scores, and nine more in the fourth, five of them unearned.
 
Graduate student designated hitter AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was 2-for-3 for WP. Junior starter Frankie Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) took the loss (0-2) after allowing nine hits and 11 runs (10 earned) over 2.1 innings, striking out three and walking two. Classmate Jon Bujtas (Boonton, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) surrendered three walks, four hits and five runs in 0.2 inning, while junior Cavan Penberthy (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) went 3.0 innings and gave up six runs (one earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Troy Sigrist (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) pitched the final inning and allowed one hit.
 
Center fielder Kyle Haen was 3-for-3 with a triple, four RBI and four runs scored for the Warhawks. Starter Colin Grove (1-0) surrendered one run and eight hits in 6.0 innings on the mound, posting three strikeouts.
 
William Paterson will finish its Florida trip Saturday, March 21, against Amherst at 9:00 a.m.
