LAKE WALES, FLA. – William Paterson improved to 6-1 this season with a 9-2, 14-10 baseball sweep of Ripon (2-4) March 17 at the Central Florida Invitational.
Game OneJunior left fielder
Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) and freshman first baseman
Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) each had three hits as WP started the day with a 9-2 victory.
Hoagland opened the second inning on second base after an error, and was promptly knocked in by a single to right field by sophomore catcher
Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) for a 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers added four runs in the bottom of the third. Garguilo hit a leadoff single, advanced to third via a groundout and scored thanks to a double from junior right fielder
Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional). Hoagland's two-out base hit plated Kenny, followed by a Knauf two-run home run.
The Red Hawks got on the scoreboard during the top of the fourth inning, using a double, single and sacrifice fly for a single score.
William Paterson notched two runs during the home half of the same frame. Garguilo again reached as the leadoff hitter, singling to shortstop, and a walk and fielder's choice put runners on the corners for graduate student designated hitter
AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange). His squeeze attempt was enough to score Garguilo, but resulted in an out at second base, a fielder's choice and RBI. Hoagland's triple to right-center field sent Flores home and made it a 7-1 margin.
Two singles and an error allowed Ripon to add one sixth-inning run, but the Pioneers scored twice more in the bottom of the same frame. Flores was hit by a pitch and lifted for sophomore pinch runner
Jared Guglielmino (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield), Hoagland had a base hit to center and junior shortstop
Victor Sanchez (Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) sent an RBI-single down the right field line. Freshman second baseman

WP struck right away with a pair of runs during the top of the first inning. Sophomore center fielder
Mike Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) drew a leadoff walk and stole second, then reached third when Garguilo got aboard thanks to an error. Hoagland's sacrifice fly allowed Abate to touch home, and consecutive singles by Kenny and Flores plated Garguilo.
A double, single and error got one of the runs back for Ripon in the second, but William Paterson added four scores in the third. Hoagland sent a one-out single to right field, Kenny had a base hit to left and Flores walked, loading the bases for Abel, who drove in all three with a double to center. Sanchez later singled in Abel to make it a 6-1 lead.
The Red Hawks got a single, walk and two-run double during the home half of the third before Flores singled in Garguilo during the top of the fourth inning.
Three runners crossed the plate for WP in the fifth. Pevny and Sanchez both singled and moved up a base via an Eggert sacrifice. Sophomore pinch hitter
Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) had a two-run base hit to left-center field, and three batters later he scored himself when Kenny singled to center.

Steve Duda (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) delivered Bailey with a pinch-hit single to short.
