Field Hockey Succumbs on Senior Night, 2-1 in Overtime

Pioneers Drop Regular-Season Finale to No. 19 Rowan

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – A goal 2:08 into overtime was the difference as the William Paterson field hockey team (10-7, 3-3 NJAC) fell 2-1 to visiting No. 19 Rowan (13-5, 5-1 NJAC) on Senior Night Oct. 31.

Fourth-seeded WP will play at top-seeded and second-ranked The College of New Jersey (16-1, 6-0 NJAC) in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament semifinals Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m.

The Profs struck early when junior forward Jenna Pressler finished to the left side of the cage 3:15 into the contest.

The Pioneers nearly had the equalizer twice during the first half, but sophomore forward Carly Satter's (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) shot was saved and an Angelica Giammetta (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) effort was stopped by senior defender Samantha Potoczak.

The Pioneers were able to knot the score in the 56th minute when senior midfielder Felicia Wetzel (Point Pleasant, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) threaded a pass that junior midfielder Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) buried for her second goal of the season.

Stanton and junior midfielder Courtney Allen (Woodbine, N.J./Ocean City) kept the game tied with defensive saves during the final 10 minutes of regulation as Rowan pressed for the go-ahead goal.

The third time was the charm for the Profs during the extra time, cashing in a third penalty corner when senior back Marisa Marini inserted to freshman forward/midfielder Rachel Galante, who slid it to Pressler. She struck to the left side of the goal for the game winner at the 92:03 mark.

Senior goalie Meg Davies (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) had seven saves for the Pioneers, and Stanton and Allen each contributed a pair of defensive saves. Sophomore Carly DeMarco posted one stop for Rowan.

Prior to the game, WP honored seniors Davies, Giammetta, Mollie Kearns (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional), McKenna Reynolds (Delran, N.J./Delran) and Wetzel.
