Volleyball Splits Pair of Home Matches

Pioneers Defeat York Before Falling in Five to MSMC

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (9-7) started its day with a 3-0 victory against York, N.Y. (3-12), but its late rally fell short against Mount Saint Mary (6-14), 3-2, Oct. 3.
 
The Pioneers opened with a 25-10, 25-5, 25-14 victory against the Cardinals. Junior outside hitter Erin Roach (Clark, N.J./Union County Vo-Tech) collected eight digs and a match-best 11 kills, and freshman setter Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) collected 36 assists and a team-high nine digs. Senior middle hitter Issel Garcia (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) posted six kills, while freshman outside hitter Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) finished with eight digs.
 
Sophomore outside hitter Renee Daley paced York with eight kills, senior setter Kiranjeet Kaur dished 11 assists and sophomore defensive specialist Mary Pamolarco had seven digs.
 
After losing the first two sets to the Knights by identical 25-20 scores, WP evened the match with 25-22 and 26-24 victories. Mount Saint Mary jumped out to an early advantage during the fifth and deciding set, and held on for a 15-12 finishing win.
 
Roach and senior opposite hitter Nicole Spicer (Whiting, N.J./Manchester Twp.) each contributed 20 kills and 18 digs. Caruso had 47 assists and 17 digs, sophomore libero Julianna Ginefra (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) collected 14 digs and Griffith finished with 11 digs.
 
Junior outside hitter Rachell Sabatini led MSMC with 19 kills, adding 11 digs. Freshman setter Kim Gries and junior setter Kristen Maddock each had 26 assists, and senior libero Jen Gries tallied 23 digs.
 
William Paterson will return to conference play Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Stockton at 7:00 p.m.
