Field Hockey Secures NJAC Tourney Bid with 3-2 Victory

Pioneers Defeat Visiting Stockton

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson field hockey team (10-4, 3-0 NJAC) secured a spot in the upcoming New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament with a 3-2 home victory against Stockton (3-10, 0-4 NJAC) Oct. 17.

The Ospreys owned the early lead thanks to a Victoria Caiazzo goal off a penalty corner 6:34 into the contest.

Senior midfielder Felicia Wetzel (Point Pleasant, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) got the goal back five minutes later, dribbling down the right side of the field and firing into the left side of the cage.

Wetzel pushed the Pioneers ahead 2-1 in the 21st minute, scoring unassisted when she beat the goalie to the right side of the frame.

Senior forward Angelica Giammetta (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) made it a two-goal lead at the 26:48 mark, batting in sophomore forward Carly Satter's (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) cross from the right side.

Stockton answered with 21 seconds remaining in the first half when junior forward Laura Olbrich received a pass from sophomore back Alexa Massa and fired from the top of the circle during a penalty corner.

Senior goalie Meg Davies (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) had four stops for the Pioneers, and was aided by three defensive saves from junior midfielder Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional), including two during the second half. Sophomore Emily Sorochynskyj posted two stops for the Ospreys.

William Paterson will put its seven-game win streak on the line Wednesday, Oct. 21, at No. 7 Montclair State at 7:00 p.m.
