Women’s Soccer Can’t Maintain Early Lead Against Rutgers-Newark

Pioneers Drop 2-1 Decision to Scarlet Raiders

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's soccer team (3-8-2, 1-4-1 NJAC) jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold off Rutgers-Newark (12-3-1, 3-2-1 NJAC) down the stretch, 2-1, Oct. 14.

The Pioneers got on the scoreboard quickly when they were awarded a corner kick during the opening moments of the contest. Senior midfielder Gina Cowdrick (Island Heights, N.J./Central Regional) sent the ball over the box to sophomore midfielder Rachel Rivell (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional), whose header from the left side went across the goal mouth to junior midfielder Amanda Carmichael (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional), who knocked in the bouncing ball for a 1-0 margin 3:10 into the contest.

The Scarlet Raiders leveled the score 18 minutes later when senior Julie Dantoni chipped a ball toward senior Sara Corson, who finished at the 21:32 mark.

Corson struck again in the 56th minute when she cleaned up her own rebound to inside the right post.

Senior Kat Clint (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) had seven saves for WP, and sophomore Diana Carvalho did not make a stop for Rutgers-Newark.

William Paterson will visit Rowan Friday, Oct. 16, at 6:00 p.m.
