Women’s Basketball Suffers 78-67 Loss to TCNJ

Rodriguez Scores Season-High 20 Points for Pioneers

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J – Freshman guard Jackie Rodriguez (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) scored a season-best 20 points, but the William Paterson women's basketball team (9-7, 5-4 NJAC) suffered a 78-67 loss to visiting The College of New Jersey (9-7, 4-5 NJAC) Jan. 17.

The Lions stretched an early 10-8 advantage into a nine-point lead (19-10, 11:08), thanks in part to five points from senior guard Kelly Coughlin. Six straight Pioneer tallies, the last a layup by freshman guard Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park), pulled WP to within two at 23-21 with 7:20 remaining in the opening period, but TCNJ answered with a 10-2 run and carried a 38-30 edge into the break. Rodriguez led all first-half scorers with nine points.

TCNJ led by as many as 16 (57-41, 12:32) during the second period before WP cut it to five (70-65, 1:41) thanks to a three-point play by senior guard Brittany Harden (Millville, N.J./Sacred Heart). But, the Pioneers' comeback hopes were short lived, as Coughlin drained a three-pointer and junior guard Angelica Esposito went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line during the game's next 47 seconds to again make it a double-digit margin.

Harden finished with 11 points, six rebounds, seven assists and six steals. Senior forward Ashley Marfo (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) and junior guard Sara Luberto (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) each contributed 10 tallies, and junior forward Alex Milne (Howell, N.J./Howell) added nine points to her game-best eight rebounds.

Coughlin led five Lions in double figures with 16 points, while Esposito had 13 tallies and five assists.

William Paterson will host Ramapo Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 6:00 p.m.
