Volleyball Starts Home Slate With Pair of Victories

Pioneers Get Past Manhattanville, Sweep Brooklyn

Senior Danielle Salemo led WP with 28 total kills during a pair of victories.

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (3-0) earned a 3-2 victory against Manhattanville (3-2) and a 3-0 win against Brooklyn (1-7) during the Pioneers' volleyball home opener Sept. 6.

After winning the first set 25-18, WP fell to the Valiants 25-17 in the second. The Pioneers won the third (25-23) and dropped the fourth (25-12) before securing a 15-8 fifth-set victory. Senior outside hitter Daniella Salemo (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) paced William Paterson with 16 kills and five service aces, adding 15 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Erin Roach (Clark, N.J./Union County Vo-Tech) collected a team-best 19 digs. Senior setter Danielle Koukos (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) posted 40 assists and 13 digs, senior middle hitter Shauna VanDeRee (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) had 11 kills and 10 digs, and sophomore middle hitter Ariana Gomez (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) put down 10 kills. Junior outside hitter/opposite hitter Nicole Spicer (Whiting, N.J./Manchester Twp.) collected 14 digs and eight kills, and freshman libero Julianna Ginefra (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) posted 18 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Alissa Primavera led Manhattanville with 21 kills, sophomore outside hitter Sam Miano finished with 21 digs, and sophomore setter Megan Quinabo had 38 assists and 17 digs.

WP cruised to a 25-14, 25-12, 25-13 win against the Bulldogs. Salemo again led the Pioneers in kills with 12, Spicer had a double-double with 10 kills and a team-best 11 digs, and Koukos dished 11 assists. Senior setter Alaina Clark (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) chipped in nine assists.

Sophomore middle hitter Francesca LoCascio led Brooklyn with nine kills. Freshman setter Jessica Yin tallied 16 assists and nine digs.

William Paterson will host Centenary Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7:00 p.m.
