No. 24 Pioneers, No. 4 Salisbury to Meet in NCAA Regional Second Round May 10

SALISBURY, MD. – No. 24 William Paterson (31-9, 15-3 NJAC) will play No. 4 Salisbury (36-3, 11-1 Capital) in a winners' bracket game of the 2014 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Salisbury, Maryland, Regional Saturday, May 10, at 11:00 a.m. at SU Softball Field. Live statistics and video will be available.
 
The winner of that contest will advance directly to the championship round Sunday, May 11. The loser of the 11:00 a.m. game will play again Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in an elimination game against the winner of the Manhattanville (27-8, 13-1 MAC Freedom) vs. Penn State Berks (29-9, 19-2 NEAC) elimination contest to be played Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
 
WP started NCAA Tournament play with a 2-0 shutout victory against Manhattanville May 9, and Salisbury defeated Penn State Berks by a 5-2 count in the other first-round contest.
 
WP is making its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2014), reaching the NCAA Softball Championship Finals (College World Series) in 2001 and 2005.
 
Senior shortstop Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII), a four-time all-conference selection (2014, 2013 All-First Teams; 2012, 2011 All-Second Teams) and two-time all-region pick (2013 All-First Team, 2012 All-Second Team), leads WP with a .414 average, .454 on-base percentage, 53 hits, 29 RBI and six triples, adding 26 runs scored and a .578 slugging percentage. Freshman outfielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) is hitting .376 with 28 runs scored, 18 RBI and two home runs. First-team all-NJAC sophomore outfielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) holds a .337 average with 23 RBI while contributing a team-high .602 slugging percentage, 11 doubles and three home runs.       
     
The March 17, March 31, April 7, April 21 and April 28 NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week as well as a member of the All-NJAC Second Team, freshman Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) has a team-best 13 wins (12-2) to go along with a 1.15 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 91.2 innings pitched. She has held opposing batters to a .204 average in 21 appearances and eight starts. Classmate Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South), the March 24 and April 14 NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week, owns a 9-6 record, 1.66 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 101.1 innings pitched while limiting batters to a .223 average during 17 starts and 20 appearances.
 
The Pioneers were the top seed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament, bowing out in the third round to third-seeded and 22nd-ranked Rowan, 4-1, on May 3. Rowan (34-10, 14-4 NJAC) went on to win the NJAC title May 4. Manhattanville won the MAC Freedom Tournament title with a 7-4 decision against King's (Pa.) May 3. Salisbury fell to top-seeded and 13th-ranked Christopher Newport, 3-2 in eight innings, in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament final April 19. Penn State Berks earned an NCAA automatic bid with a 9-0 victory against SUNY Institute of Technology May 4 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament championship game.
