Castelli Throws One-Hitter, No. 24 Softball Starts NCAA Tournament With 2-0 Win

Pioneers Defeat Manhattanville in Opener

Freshman Gabrielle Castelli tossed a one-hitter and WP opened NCAA Tournament play with a 2-0 victory against Manhattanville.
Box Score SALSIBURY, Md. – Freshman pitcher Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) allowed just one hit as No. 24 William Paterson (31-9) earned a 2-0 victory against Manhattanville (27-9) in the first game of the double-elimination NCAA Division III Softball Championship Salisbury, Maryland, Regional May 9.
 
The Pioneers will face No. 4 Salisbury, a 5-2 winner against Penn State Berks in the other first-round game, Saturday, May 10, at 11:00 a.m. The winner of that contest will advance directly to the championship round Sunday, May 11. The loser of the 11:00 a.m. game will play again Saturday at 4:00 p.m. against the winner of the Manhattanville vs. PSU Berks contest to be played Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
 
Junior center fielder Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) got the Pioneers' offense started during the bottom of the fourth, leading off the inning with a double to right-center field. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt from senior shortstop Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII), she scored on a Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) sacrifice fly to give WP a 1-0 lead.
 
The Pioneers made it 2-0 in the fifth. Freshman third baseman Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) reached on an error and advanced to second when freshman catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) was hit by a pitch. After Castelli laid down a sacrifice bunt with two strikes to advance the runners, Wasilak scored on a strikeout and a wild pitch.
 
Manhattanville brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Castelli was able to get a strikeout looking to end the game.
 
Wimmershoff went 1-for-1 with an RBI, sac bunt and sacrifice fly for the Pioneers. Miele and Principe added the other two William Paterson hits. Castelli (13-2) allowed just one hit while walking two and striking out three in the complete-game shutout.
 
Designated player Alyx Scapperotti picked up Manhattanville's only hit. Alyssa Taylor (25-7) gave up one earned run on three hits and struck out three batters in 6.0 innings.
