No. 24 Softball Falls to No. 4 Salisbury, 1-0, in NCAA Tournament

Pioneers To Play in Elimination Game at 4:00 p.m.

Freshman third baseman Rachel Wasilak collected two hits and turned an unassisted double play for the Pioneers.
Box Score SALSIBURY, Md. – The No. 24 William Paterson softball team (31-10) was defeated, 1-0, by No. 4 Salisbury (37-3) in the third game of the double-elimination NCAA Division III Softball Championship Salisbury, Maryland, Regional May 10.
 
William Paterson will play again Saturday at 4:00 p.m. against the winner of the Manhattanville vs. PSU Berks contest to be played Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
 
The Seagulls took a 1-0 lead during the bottom of the fourth inning. Designated player Paige Knussman led off with a single to left and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. After catcher Rebecca Hoey singled to short, right fielder Angela Malgieri lined a double to center to plate Knussman and set up runners on second and third with just one out. Freshman pitcher Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) then got the next batter to line out to freshman third baseman Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston), who tagged the runner out at third to complete an inning-ending double play.
 
Singles from freshman right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) and senior shortstop Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) put runners on first and second for the Pioneers with two outs in the sixth, but WP could not push a run across.
 
The Pioneers put the tying run on base with one out in the seventh. However, pitcher Rachel Johnson was able to get the next two batters out to end the game.
 
Wasilak went 2-for-3, and Fryer, Miele and junior second baseman Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) each picked up a hit. Podmajersky (9-7) took the loss, allowing one run on six hits while walking one and striking out two in 4.1 innings. Freshman Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) threw a perfect 1.2 innings out of the pen.
 
First baseman Harley Hill collected two hits for Salisbury. Johnson (22-2) earned the win, allowing five hits with eight strikeouts in the complete-game shutout.
