Box Score 2 MAHWAH, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (15-5, 5-1 NJAC) split a doubleheader at Ramapo (9-10, 3-3 NJAC) April 6, bouncing back from a 1-0 loss in game one to defeat the Roadrunners 3-0 in game two.
Game OneRamapo needed just one run to beat the Pioneers, 1-0, during the first game of the afternoon.
After the two teams exchanged zeros for the first five innings, Ramapo got on the board during the bottom of the sixth. Erin Witherspoon singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Nicole Hernandez base hit to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers collected four hits from four different players. Freshman
Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) fell to 8-1, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out three batters in 6.0 innings.
Hernandez went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Ramapo. Harley Masiello (4-6) earned the win for the Roadrunners, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out five in the complete-game shutout.
Game TwoHighlighted by a two-run single from freshman catcher
Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South), the Pioneers score three runs during the top of the sixth to defeat Ramapo, 3-0, in game two and earn the split.
Once again, the game was scoreless for the first five innings. This time it was WP that struck in the sixth. After senior shortstop
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) led off the inning with a walk, junior designated player
Kristen Gardner (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) doubled to left, setting up runners on second and third with no outs. Sophomore left fielder
Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) reached on a Roadrunner error, scoring Miele and advancing pinch runner
Laura Henriquez (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) to third. With two outs, Fryer singled through the left side to plate two runs and give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
Fryer went 2-for-2 with two RBI, and Miele collected two hits for WP. Freshman
Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) improved to 3-3, allowing just two hits and walking one while striking out seven batters in the shutout.
Danielle Saporito and Hernandez picked up Ramapo's two hits. Nicole Schneider (4-2) took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out two in 7.0 innings.
William Paterson will host New Jersey City University for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 8, at 3:00 p.m.
