Box Score 2 Video HighlightsWAYNE, N.J. – After winning game one, 2-1 in eight innings, the William Paterson softball team (14-4, 4-0 NJAC) completed its sweep of Rutgers-Newark (9-13, 0-4 NJAC) by coming from behind and winning game two, 3-2, on April 3.
Game OneThe Pioneers scored runs in the seventh and eighth to come back and defeat the Scarlet-Raiders 2-1 in eight innings during the first game.
After the two teams traded zeros for the first four innings, Rutgers-Newark broke through during the fifth on a double from Toniann Donde and an RBI single from Anna Carlson.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, senior shortstop
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) reached on an error and scored from first on a
Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) double to left-center field to tie the game at 1-1.
With the international tie-breaker rule in effect during the bottom of the eighth, junior catcher
Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from freshman third baseman
Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston). Freshman right fielder
Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) then lifted a fly ball to deep center field to score Rouse and capture the 2-1 victory for the Pioneers.
Wimmershoff collected a hit and an RBI for WP. Freshman
Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) earned her seventh win of the season, pitching a perfect eighth inning. Sophomore
Chelsea Batelli (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) gave up one run on seven hits and struck out one in 7.0 innings.
Donde went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Scarlet Raiders. Jess Cannon (2-2) took the loss, allowing one unearned run in 1.1 innings out of the pen. Brianna Alicchio gave up one unearned run on four hits in 6.1 innings.
Game TwoWP held off a Rutgers-Newark rally during the top of the seventh inning to secure a 3-2 win in game two and complete the sweep.
A single, sacrifice bunt, wild pitch and a ground out gave the Scarlet Raiders a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back singles up the middle from Fryer and junior first baseman
Melissa Swain (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI) put runners on first and second with two outs. A throwing error on a ground ball to the pitcher allowed Fryer to score and tie the game at 1-1.
Wimmershoff led off the fourth inning with a double to left-center and scored on a
Lauren Bogart (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) single up the middle to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
WP extended its lead during the bottom of the sixth, when three-straight singles from junior second baseman
Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.), Bogart and Wasilak plated a run and gave the Pioneers a 3-1 advantage.
With runners on first and third and two outs, the Scarlet Raiders crossed the plate on a Pioneer error to bring the score to 3-2. However, Castelli was able to get the next batter to ground out to end the game.
Bogart went 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate for WP. Castelli (8-0) picked up her second win of the day, allowing one unearned run on three hits and striking out five in 4.2 innings of relief. Freshman
Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) gave up one run on four hits and struck out three in 2.1 innings.
Tiara Santi picked up two hits for the Scarlet Raiders. Katie Boyd (4-6) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits. Cannon threw 0.2 inning out of the pen.
William Paterson will travel to Ramapo for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 5, at 1:00 p.m.
