Box Score 2 WAYNE, N.J. – Senior shortstop
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) went a combined 6-for-8 with four RBI, two runs scored and two doubles, as the No. 21 William Paterson softball team (27-7, 13-3 NJAC) earned a 6-4, 6-2 sweep at DeSales (11-16) April 24.
Game OneWP won the back-and-forth battle of game one, scoring twice during the top of the sixth to earn a 6-4 victory against the Bulldogs.
During the top of the first, freshman right fielder
Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) singled, stole second and scored on a base hit up the middle from Miele to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead.
Two singles and a sacrifice fly plated three runs for DeSales in the third and brought the score to 3-1.
After Miele singled up the middle and sophomore left fielder
Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) reached on an error, freshman third baseman
Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) singled down the left field line to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 3-2 and set up runners on second and third. Wimmershoff then stole home to tie the game at 3-3 after three and a half innings.
A Miele double to right-center field scored Fryer and gave the Pioneers a 4-3 lead during the top of the fifth.
DeSales tied the game in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of two hits and a Pioneer error.
WP loaded the bases during the seventh after junior
Melissa Swain (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI) delivered a pinch-hit single, junior second baseman
Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) was hit by a pitch and freshman pitcher
Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) singled to the pitcher. A walk and a fielder's choice scored two runs and gave the Pioneers a 6-4 lead.
DeSales put the tying run on base in the bottom of the frame, but Castelli induced a ground out to third base to end the game.
Miele went 3-for-4 with two RBI, a double and a run scored for WP. Castelli (12-2) earned the win, allowing two hits while walking one and striking out two in 2.2 innings of relief. Freshman
Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) gave up four unearned runs on eight hits with one strikeout in 4.1 innings.
DJ McCauley collected three hits for DeSales. Brittany Wilson (1-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits and walking one in 2.0 innings out of the pen. McCauley allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits and struck out five batters in 5.0 innings.
Game TwoWP scored three times in the seventh during game two to secure a 6-2 win and the sweep.
Junior center fielder
Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) got the Pioneer offense started during the top of the first by singling and scoring on a Miele double to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
A double from McCauley and a single from Carly Bartholomew tied the game in the bottom of the frame.
McCauley put the Bulldogs ahead in the third with an RBI single to give DeSales a 2-1 advantage.
During the top of the fifth, Swain singled, advanced to third on a double from Fryer and scored on an error. Miele followed with a single to third base to plate Fryer and bring the score to 3-2.

Kristen Gardner (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) gave the Pioneers a 6-2 lead.
Miele went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Fryer, Principe and Gardner each collected two hits.
Chelsea Batelli (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) improved to 6-1, allowing two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out three in the complete-game effort.
McCauley picked up two hits for DeSales. Rachel Vogel took the loss, giving up six runs (four earned) on 13 hits and striking out five in 6.0 innings. Wilson threw 1.0 inning of relief.
William Paterson will travel to The College of New Jersey for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26, at 1:00 p.m.
