WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (25-7, 13-3 NJAC) celebrated senior day by earning a 0-1, 6-1 split against No. 2 Montclair State University (31-3, 14-2 NJAC) April 22.

With two conference games left to play, the Pioneers are currently tied for second place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).

Game One
The Red Hawks needed just one run to defeat WP, 1-0, in game one.

Montclair State threatened in the first, second and fifth innings, putting runners on first and second with one out, but freshman Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) was able to work out of the jam each time. During the top of the second, junior center fielder Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) made a diving catch to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

During the top of the sixth, Lauren Guillen singled to second base to score Jeanine Karnilla and give the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second with no outs, but were unable to get a run across.

Senior shortstop Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) went 2-for-2 with a walk for WP. Podmajersky (6-4) took the loss, allowing one run on three hits with six walks and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Freshman Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) gave up one hit while walking two and striking out three in 1.2 innings of relief.

Melany Zeller collected two hits for the Red Hawks. Alex Hill (20-2) earned the win, allowing three hits while walking one and striking out six in the complete-game effort.

Game Two
Sophomore left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) blasted a three run home run in the third to lead the Pioneers to a 6-1 victory in game two to earn the split.

After freshman designated player Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./ Northern Burlington Regional) singled through the left side and Miele was intentionally walked, Wimmershoff hit a homer to left to give WP a 3-0 lead after three.

During the bottom of the fifth, Principe and freshman third baseman Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) pulled off a double steal of second and home to bring the score to 4-0.

Montclair State got on the board in the sixth with a Brianna Davidson single up the middle to cut the lead to 4-1.

With one out in the bottom of the frame, freshman right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) doubled to left center and Stanton singled to third and advanced to second on the throw. Miele followed with a single to center field, scoring Fryer. She then got caught in a run down between first and second which allowed Stanton to score and give the Pioneers a 6-1 advantage.

Stanton, Wimmershoff and freshman catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) each had two hits for WP. Catelli (11-2) earned the win, allowing one run on five hits while walking one in the complete game.

Davidson went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Montclair State. Alison Cullen (11-1) picked up the loss, giving up six runs on 12 hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
