WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (12-4, 2-0 NJAC) was swept by Stevens (14-4) on April 2, losing game one, 4-3 in eight innings, and game two 6-2.

Game One
The Pioneers scored two runs to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, but ultimately fell to the Ducks, 4-3 in eight innings.

Stevens got on the board during the top of the first on a double and a single to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Ducks scored two more runs in the third, lacing together four singles and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to bring the score to 3-0.

Freshman right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a triple, but was thrown out at the plate after junior first baseman Melissa Swain (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI) blooped a double down the left-field line. Junior center fielder Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) followed with a double to center field to plate senior pinch-runner Laura Henriquez (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) and bring the score to 3-1.

During the bottom of the seventh, junior pinch hitter Lauren Bogart (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) reached on an error and advanced to second on a pinch-hit single from senior Danielle Capozzi (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional). After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Fryer blasted a two-run double to center field to tie the game at 3-3 and force extra innings.

With the international tie-breaker rule in effect, Stevens took advantage of a wild pitch and a Pioneer error to push a run across and take a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, the Pioneers had a runner on third with one out but were unable to score.

Fryer and Principe each collected two hits for WP. Freshman Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) fell to 2-2, allowing one unearned run on five hits while walking one and striking out nine in 5.2 innings of relief.  Junior Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) gave up three runs and struck out one batter in 2.1 innings.

Danielle DeFeo went 4-for-5 and scored a run for the Ducks. Kayla Berardi (7-4) earned the win for Stevens, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out one in the complete-game effort.

Game Two
The Ducks scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings on their way to defeating the Pioneers, 6-2, in the nightcap.

Once again, Stevens scored during the first, crossing the plate on a fielder's choice just before the third out was made to take a 1-0 lead. They struck again in the second, loading the bases with two outs and scoring on a Pioneer error to bring the score to 2-0.

The Ducks increased their lead to 4-0 during the top of the fifth, when Stephanie Senkevich drove in a pair with a single up the middle.

Stevens added two more runs in the sixth, lacing together four base hits to bring the score to 6-0.

The Pioneers broke through in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Swain doubled down the right-field line and advanced to third on a Principe single through the left side. Senior shortstop Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) drove in Swain with a single up the middle, and Bogart plated Principe with a base hit through the left side to cut the score to 6-2.

However, Brianna Sandone was able to retire the Pioneers in order during the seventh and secure the victory for the Ducks.

Swain went 2-for-3 at the plate for WP. Podmajersky (2-3) took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in 1.1 innings. Freshman Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) gave up four runs on nine hits and struck out four in 4.2 innings of relief. Freshman Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./ Northern Burlington Regional) walked one batter in 1.0 inning.

Jamie DeGennaro and Jessica Rees each collected three hits for Stevens. Sandone (7-1) allowed two runs on seven hits to earn the complete-game victory.

William Paterson will host Rutgers-Newark for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 3, at 3:00 p.m.
