Softball Wins Twice At Rutgers-Camden

Pioneers Earn 6-2 and 2-1 Victories

Sophomore outfielder Kelsey Wimmershoff collected six RBI during the doubleheader sweep at Rutgers-Camden.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CAMDEN, N.J. – Sophomore left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) went a combined 4-for-7 with six RBI as the William Paterson softball team (24-6, 12-2 NJAC) completed a 6-2 and 2-1 sweep at Rutgers-Camden (15-12-1, 7-7 NJAC) April 18.
 
Game One
Wimmershoff blasted a three-run home run during the top of the seventh inning to secure a 6-2 victory for the Pioneers in game one.
 
Freshman right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) got the WP offense started in the first when she walked, advanced to second on a Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) sacrifice bunt and scored on a base hit from senior shortstop Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who was able to get to third on an error. Wimmershoff followed with a single to center field to plate Miele and give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
 
During the top of the third, Miele reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Wimmershoff double down the left-field line to increase WP's lead to 3-0.
 
The Scarlet Raptors got on the board when Krystine Rice hit a two-run home run and brought the score to 3-2 after four innings.
 
After pinch hitter Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) and Miele singled during the seventh, Wimmershoff homered to left field to give the Pioneers a 6-2 lead.
 
Freshman pitcher Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) retired the Rutgers-Camden batters in order in the bottom of the frame to secure the victory.
 
Wimmershoff went 3-for-4 with five RBI, and Miele recorded two hits and score three runs. Castelli (10-2) earned the victory for the Pioneers, allowing just one hit and striking out five in 3.2 innings out of the pen. Freshman Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) gave up two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out four batters in 3.1 innings.
 
Rice went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored for Rutgers-Camden. Brittany Scott (13-9) took the loss, allowing six runs on ten hits while walking two and striking out three.
 
Game Two
The Pioneers needed just two runs to defeat the Scarlet Raptors 2-1 in game two and complete the sweep.
 
Once again, WP got on the board during the first. Fryer led off the game with a single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. With two outs, Wimmershoff lined a single off Scott's leg, scoring Fryer and giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
 
Rutgers-Camden got the run back in the bottom of the frame on a Rice single to left to tie the game at 1-1.
 
During the second, junior catcher Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) reached on a fielder's choice, went to second on a groundout and scored on an error to give the Pioneers a 2-1 advantage.
 
Sophomore Chelsea Batelli (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) retired the Scarlet Raptors batters in order during the next four innings before surrendering Rutgers-Camden's third hit of the game in the sixth.
 
The Scarlet Raptors got the tying run on third with two outs during the bottom of the seventh, but Castelli got a strikeout to end the threat and the game.

Fryer went 3-for-4 with a run scored, and junior designated player Kristen Gardner (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) collected two hits for the Pioneers. Batelli (5-1) earned the win, allowing one run on four hits and striking out one in 6.0 innings. Castelli picked up her first collegiate save, striking out one batter in 1.0 perfect inning.
 
Rice picked up a hit and an RBI for Rutgers-Camden. Scott fell to 13-10, giving up two runs (one earned) on nine hits while walking one and striking out two in 7.0 innings.  
 
William Paterson will host No. 2 Montclair State for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 22, at 3:00 p.m.
