Game OneHighlighted by a two-run double from junior center fielder
Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany), WP scored twice in the fifth to come back and defeat the Profs 3-2 in game one.
The Pioneers got on the board during the bottom of the first inning, when a Rowan error allowed Principe to score from second and give WP an early 1-0 lead.
The Profs loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third, but freshman pitcher
Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) was able to get a foul out to left, and sophomore left fielder
Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) threw the advancing runner out at the plate to end the inning.
Rowan took the lead during the top of the fourth, loading the bases and scoring two runs on a single through the left side and a passed ball to bring the score to 2-1.
During the bottom of the fifth, junior catcher
Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston). Freshman right fielder
Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) reached on a fielder's choice to set up runners on first and second, and both runners advanced on a
Melissa Swain (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI) groundout. Principe then blasted a two-run double to left-center field to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.
Castelli retired the Profs in order during the sixth and seventh to secure the victory for WP.
Fryer, Principe and Swain collected the Pioneers' three hits. Castelli earned her fifth win of the season, allowing just two hits and striking out three batters in 3.2 innings of relief. Podmajersky gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits while walking four and striking out one.
Rowan picked up four hits from four different players. Krysti Maronski (7-3) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and five walks.
Game TwoJunior second baseman
Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) looped a game-winning single into left field during the bottom of the eighth inning to complete the sweep for the Pioneers in game two.
WP got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Senior shortstop
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Austin. Junior designated player
Keanna Ross (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) singled to second to plate Miele and give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
An RBI double from left fielder Jennifer Arcella and a two-run home run from first baseman Ashley DeYoung gave the Profs a 3-1 advantage after two and a half innings.
The Pioneers got those runs back in the bottom of the frame. Wimmershoff led off the inning with a base hit to center and advanced to third on a two-out base hit from Principe. After Miele was intentionally walked, Austin singled to left field to tie the game at 3-3.
The two teams exchanged zeros for the next four innings. With the international tie-breaker rule in effect during the top of the eighth inning, the Profs put runners on second and third with just one out. Castelli induced a ground ball to Miele who quickly threw the runner out at the plate to keep the game tied. She then struck out the next batter to work out of the jam.
After making the final out of the previous inning, Principe was placed on second in the bottom of the frame and promptly advanced to third on a Miele sacrifice bunt. Austin then blooped a single into left field to earn the 4-3 victory for the Pioneers.
Austin went 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Wimmershoff collected two hits and scored a run for WP. Castelli (6-0) picked up her second win of the afternoon, allowing just one walk and striking out four in 3.0 innings out of the pen. Sophomore
