Box Score 2 MADISON, N.J. – Paced by two stellar pitching performances, the William Paterson softball team (10-2) completed a doubleheader sweep at Drew (11-5) March 27. The Pioneers defeated the Rangers 1-0 in the opener and 10-1 in game two (five innings).
Game One
Freshman pitcher
Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) allowed just one hit and struck out six batters in 5.2 innings out of the pen to help the Pioneers earn a 1-0 victory in game one.
WP scored the only run of the game during the top of the third inning. With two outs, junior center fielder
Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Senior shortstop
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) then singled up the middle to plate Principe and give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
Castelli did not let a Drew runner get past first base during the final five innings of the game to secure the victory.
Miele went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Castelli (4-0) earned the victory for the Pioneers. Junior
Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) walked two batters and struck out two in 1.1 innings.
Rebecca Hutsebaut picked up the Rangers' only hit of the game. Laura D'Ornellas (3-2) took the loss for Drew, allowing one run on five hits and striking out three in a complete-game effort.
Game Two
Highlighted by a home run from freshman right fielder
Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South), the Pioneer offense exploded for 10 runs during the game-two victory.
Fryer led off the game with a solo shot to get WP on the board. With two outs, Dys blasted a double to right-center field to score Prinicipe and give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
During the top of the second inning, junior second baseman
Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) singled, and freshman catcher
Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) reached on an error. Both crossed the plate on a base hit from junior left fielder
Lauren Bogart (West Milford, N.J./West Milford), bringing the score to 4-0.
After the Pioneers loaded the bases with two outs, a Rangers error allowed three runs to score, and a double from
Nicole Fryer drove in another run to give the Pioneers an 8-0 lead after two and a half innings.
A Principe triple, a Miele double and a Castelli single plated two more runs for WP in the top of the fourth and increased its lead to 10-0.
Three singles put Drew on the board during the bottom of the frame and brought the score to 10-1.
Austin went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and
Nicole Fryer, Principe, Miele and Castelli each collected two hits. Sophomore
Chelsea Batelli (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) earned her second win of the season, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out five in 5.0 innings.
The Rangers had three hits from three different players. Kristin Zeigler (4-2) took the loss for Drew, giving up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits in 3.0 innings. Casey Zdanek allowed two runs on six hits in 2.0 innings of relief.
William Paterson will play its home opener Saturday, March 29, against Rutgers-Newark at 1:00 p.m.
