Softball Wins Twice on Final Day in Florida

Pioneers Defeat Framingham State and Elmhurst

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, FLA. – William Paterson (8-2) finished its trip to the NTC Spring Games with two victories, earning a 7-2 win against Framingham State (4-6) and defeating Elmhurst (1-3), 4-1, March 21.

Game One
The Pioneers scored four runs in the fifth inning on their way to defeating Framingham State, 7-2.

The Rams took the lead during the top of the first, stringing together three consecutive singles. They added to their lead on a sacrifice fly in the third to bring the score to 2-0.

WP closed the deficit to 2-1 during the bottom of the frame. Junior first baseman Melissa Swain (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI) led off with a single to right field and advanced to second on an error. After junior center fielder Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) sacrificed her over to third, Swain scored on a Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) base hit to center.

In the fourth, freshman second baseman Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) singled to center and went to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior designated player Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington). Senior Danielle Capozzi (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) followed with a pinch-hit walk, and freshman right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) plated Wasilak with a base hit to center. Senior left fielder Laura Henriquez (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) scored on a groundout to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.

A sacrifice fly from junior catcher Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior), singles from Wasilak and Henriquez and a Farmingdale State error plated four more runs during the fifth and brought the score to 7-2.

Fryer, Miele and Wasilak each collected two hits for the Pioneers. Freshman Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) earned her third win of the season, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings out of the pen. Dys started the game, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out one batter in 2.1 innings.

Tiffanie Marsh went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Rams. Andrea Smith (1-4) took the loss, giving up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and striking out one in 5.0 innings. Taylor McGrail allowed one hit in 1.0 inning of relief.

Game Two
Freshman Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) allowed just one run in a complete-game effort to lead the Pioneers to a 4-1 victory against Elmhurst.

A Principe single scored Fryer and gave WP a 1-0 lead after two and a half innings.

During the top of the fourth, Wasilak singled to left and Capozzi doubled to left-center field to set up runners on second and third with one out. Wasilak crossed the plate on a bunt single from freshman catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South). Capozzi and Kim Fryer then scored on a Bluejay error to give the Pioneers a 4-0 advantage.

A double, sacrifice bunt and a single got Elmhurst on the board in the fifth inning and brought the score to 4-1.

Principe went 2-for-4 with an RBI at the plate for the Pioneers. Podmajersky (2-1) earned the win, allowing five hits and striking out three batters in 7.0 innings.

Katie Boals collected two hits for the Bluejays and also took the loss, giving up four runs (two earned) on nine hits and striking out five in 7.0 innings.

William Paterson will play its home opener Tuesday, March 25, against NYU-Poly at 3:30 p.m.
