Box Score 2 CLERMONT, FLA. – William Paterson (6-2) suffered a 2-1 loss in 11 innings against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (7-5), but bounced back to defeat Bethany (1-7), 2-0, at the NTC Spring Games March 19.
Game One
The Pioneers rallied in the bottom of the 11th inning but ultimately fell to UW-Stevens Point, 2-1.
The two teams exchanged zeros for the first three innings before the Pointers capitalized on two WP errors and took a 1-0 lead.
During the bottom of sixth, freshman designated player
Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./ Northern Burlington Regional) was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior first baseman
Melissa Swain (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI) and scored on an error to tie the game.
William Paterson threatened in the seventh, putting runners on second and third with one out, but was unable to score.
With the international tie-breaker rule in effect, the teams traded zeros for another three innings until the Pointers took a 2-1 lead during the top of the 11th.
In the bottom of the frame, Swain successfully sacrificed Stanton to third with one out. However, UW-Stevens Point was able to force a fly ball and a play at the plate to end the game.
Freshman right fielder
Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) collected three hits to lead the Pioneers at the plate. Freshman
Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) suffered her first loss of the season, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and striking out 13 in a complete-game effort.
Sydney Gorges went 3-for-4 for the Pointers while also allowing just two hits in 4.0 innings in the circle. Miranda Morrison (2-2) earned the win, giving up one unearned run on three hits and striking out nine batters in 7.0 innings of relief.
Game Two
Senior shortstop
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and junior catcher
Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) each drove in a run during the Pioneers' 2-0 victory against Bethany.
During the top of the first, Fryer singled to right, went to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a single from junior center fielder
Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany). After Principe stole second, Miele hit a deep fly ball to left field to score Fryer and give WP a 1-0 lead.
The Bison loaded the bases with just one out during the bottom of the frame, but sophomore pitcher
Chelsea Batelli (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) was able to induce two ground balls to end the inning.
Zeros were exchanged until the top of the fifth when Principe singled through the left side and scored on a Rouse base hit to center to extend WP's lead to 2-0.
Batelli retired the Bison in order during the last three innings of the game to secure the victory.
Fryer and Principe each had two hits for the Pioneers. Batelli (1-1) earned the victory, allowing six hits and striking out three in the complete-game shutout.
Kaitlin Tropf went 2-for-3 for Bethany. Kadie Kelly (0-2) took the loss, giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out two in 5.0 innings. Kelsey Bish surrendered one hit and struck out two batters in 2.0 innings of relief.
William Paterson will face Framingham and Elmhurst at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m., respectively, on Friday, March 21.
