KANSAS CITY, MO. -- William Paterson senior guard
Javae King-Gilchrist (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) secured a spot on the 2014 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Men's Basketball All-America First Team March 20, the first Pioneer to do so in more than a decade.
The NABC Atlantic District and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Player of the Year as well as a member of the D3hoops.com All-Atlantic Region, NABC All-Atlantic District and All-NJAC First Teams, King-Gilchrist averaged 18.9 points (second in league), 6.6 rebounds (ninth in NJAC) and a team-high 4.8 assists (second in conference, 45th in Division III) and 2.9 steals (first in league, seventh nationally) while starting all 27 contests this season. The Dec. 16 ECAC Metro and NJAC Player of the Week, he also was fourth in three-point field-goal percentage (.408, 29-71), fifth in assist/turnover ratio (1.46) and defensive rebounds (5.6 rpg), and ninth in free-throw percentage (.763, 148-194) in the conference statistics, and produced 25 double-digit scoring efforts (12 20+, two 30+), five double-figure rebounding totals and five double-doubles.
King-Gilchrist is the sixth Pioneer to be named to the NABC All-America Team, and the first WP student-athlete to be a first-team selection since Horace Jenkins (1999-2000, 2000-01), who was named the NABC's 2000 and 2001 National Player of the Year.
William Paterson finished the season 21-6 overall and 14-4 in league play, advancing to the NJAC Tournament championship game.
