Softball Splits with Bethel and Manchester

Pioneers Continue Play at NTC Spring Games

Sophomore outfielder Kelsey Wimmershoff was a combined 3-for-4 on her second day of the NTC Spring Games.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, FLA. – The William Paterson softball team (3-1) split a pair of games on its second day at the NTC Spring Games, March 16. The Pioneers fell 11-5 to Bethel (5-2), but bounced back to defeat Manchester (2-4), 14-0 in five innings.

Game One
Bethel scored five times in the seventh inning to complete an 11-5 victory against William Paterson in the first game of the afternoon.

The Pioneers struck during the bottom of the first, when junior outfielder Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) singled, stole second and scored on an error to give WP a 1-0 advantage.

Bethel took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning on an error, double and two singles.

The Royals added two more runs during the fifth, and Angie Jackson blasted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 6-1.

During the bottom of the frame, three straight singles from senior shortstop Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII), junior second baseman Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) and junior catcher Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) loaded the bases with no outs. Freshman Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./ Northern Burlington Regional) delivered a pinch-hit RBI-single and sophomore outfielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) followed with a two-run double. With two outs, freshman designated player Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) drove in Wimmershoff to cut the lead to 6-5.

However, Bethel broke the game open during the top of the seventh, lacing four hits and capitalizing on two Pioneer errors to take an 11-5 lead.

Miele paced WP at the plate, going 3-for-4 and scoring a run. Sophomore Chelsea Batelli (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) took the loss for the Pioneers, allowing four runs (two earned) and striking out one in 4.1 innings (0-1). Freshman Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) gave up seven runs (three earned) in 2.2 innings of relief.

Jackson collected three hits and four RBI for Bethel. Karli Persson (1-1) earned the victory for the Royals, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 5.2 innings. Courtney Saurer allowed three hits in 1.1 innings of relief.

Game Two
Led by freshman third baseman Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and pitcher Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove), the Pioneers cruised to a 14-0 victory against Manchester.

During the top of the first, Principe, Stanton and freshman outfielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) each drew a walk to load the bases. With two outs, Wasilak singled to left field to give the Pioneers an early 2-0 lead.

WP's offense exploded for six two-out runs in the second. After Wimmershoff walked and advanced to third on two wild pitches, Miele blasted a triple to right-center field. A double from Stanton, singles from Fryer, Wasilak and Castelli and a Manchester error brought the score to 8-0 after two frames.

Stanton was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth and scored on a double from Fryer, who advanced to third on an error. Wasilak singled to right field, collecting her fourth RBI of the game and giving WP a 10-0 advantage.

The Pioneers extended their lead to 14-0 during the top of the fifth, when Castelli collected a two-run double and later scored on an error, and junior outfielder Lauren Bogart (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) picked up an RBI-single.

Wasilak, Fryer and Castelli each had three hits for the Pioneers. Castelli earned the win, striking out three batters and allowing five hits in 5.0 innings (1-0).

Manchester saw five hits from five different players. Ashlea Nash took the loss for the Spartans, allowing 11 runs (eight earned) in 2.2 innings. Mackenzie Williams threw 2.1 innings of relief, allowing three runs on three hits.

William Paterson will face Macalester and Messiah at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m., respectively, on Tuesday, March 18.
