Women’s Basketball Cruises Past Rutgers-Camden, 88-47

Freshman Guards Rovito and Rodriguez Combine for 33 Points for Pioneers

WAYNE, N.J. – Freshman guards Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) and Jackie Rodriguez (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) combined for 33 points as the William Paterson women's basketball team (3-1, 1-0 NJAC) cruised to an 88-47 home victory in its conference opener against Rutgers-Camden (1-3, 0-1 NJAC) Nov. 22.
 
The Scarlet Raptors scored seven of the game's first nine points, but it was all Pioneers after that, turning a 38-27 halftime lead into a 43-point margin (83-40, 3:21) late in the second period, thanks to a 20-2 run that spanned nearly six minutes.
 
WP shot 48.4 (31-64) percent from the field, including a 17-for-32 (.531) effort during the second half, while limiting Rutgers-Camden to a .245 (13-53) field-goal percentage. The Pioneers also owned a 50-16 scoring advantage in the paint, and turned 36 Scarlet Raptor turnovers into 46 points.
 
Rovito was 7-for-13 (.538) for a game-best 17 points while also leading all players with five steals. Rodriguez finished 3-for-6 (.500) from behind the arc en route to 16 tallies, adding three steals, while junior guard Brittany Harden (Millville, N.J./Sacred Heart) had 13 points. Junior forward Mary Haines (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) added seven tallies, three assists and a team-high nine rebounds from off the bench, and junior guard Sara Luberto (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) chipped in nine points and three assists.
 
Junior guard Krystle Cook paced Rutgers-Camden with 12 points, freshman forward/center Michelle Obasi had eight tallies and a game-best 13 rebounds, and senior guard/forward Irene Grimanis added 10 boards.
 
William Paterson will play at Ramapo Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 5:30 p.m.
