BOSTON, MASS. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (2-0) won the Emmanuel College Invitational title Nov. 16 with a 71-47 victory against the host Saints (1-1). Junior guard
Brittany Harden (Millville, N.J./Sacred Heart) led all scorers with 18 points for the second straight day to earn the tournament's MVP award.
The Pioneers blew open a three-point game (17-14, 10:33) with a 24-3 run to end the first half, carrying a 41-17 lead into the locker room behind 61.5 (16-26) percent shooting from the field while limiting Emmanuel to a 20.6 (7-34) percent effort.
When the Saints scored 13 of the first 15 points of the second period (43-30, 15:48), WP responded with 11 unanswered tallies to remove any doubt about the outcome (54-30, 11:03).
Harden was 8-for-9 (.889) from the floor for her 18 points, adding eight rebounds. Junior forward
Mary Haines (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) posted 13 tallies, six boards, two assists, three blocked shots and four steals to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team, as did senior forward
Ashley Marfo (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield), who contributed six points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior forward
Alex Milne (Howell, N.J./Howell) pulled down a game-best 15 boards, freshman guard
Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) chipped in 13 tallies and four assists, and junior guard
Sara Luberto (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) had 12 points and four assists.
Sarah Higgins and Jennifer Bujnowski each contributed 14 points for Emmanuel. Higgins also had a team-high seven rebounds.
William Paterson will play at Farmingdale State Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 7:00 p.m.
