WAYNE, N.J. – Three Pioneers had double-doubles as the William Paterson volleyball team (1-0) battled to a 3-2 season-opening victory against visiting Lehman (2-1) Sept. 5.
After winning the first set, 25-13, WP dropped the second set, 25-11. The Pioneers won the third, 25-23, before a 26-24 loss in the fourth. Senior
Amanda Morales (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) and junior
Danielle Koukos (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) served William Paterson out to a 9-1 fifth-set lead, and the Pioneers eventually earned a 15-5 victory.
Junior
Shauna VanDeRee (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) posted 13 kills and 13 kills to pace WP. Freshman
Mary Long (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) collected 12 kills, 11 digs and two block solos, and junior outside hitter
Daniella Salemo (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) registered 11 kills and 12 digs. Morales finished with 10 digs, and Koukos had 35 assists and nine digs.
Juniors Jo-Marie Aquino and Besa Zabelaj each contributed 17 kills for the Lightning. Classmate Julia Mercado had 21 digs and junior Jessica Gonzalez posted 42 assists.
William Paterson will host a tri-match Saturday, Sept. 7, taking on Manhattanville at 11:00 a.m. and Farmingdale State at 3:00 p.m.
