Scouting the Pioneers
William Paterson is 1-0 overall and 0-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) following a 21-19 season-opening victory at King's (0-1) Sept. 7.
Senior
Ryan Gresik (Newton, N.J./Newton), a member of the 2012 All-NJAC Team Honorable Mention, is 22-for-30 for 250 yards, completing touchdown passes to three different teammates against the Monarchs. The Sept. 8 NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, he became WP's career leader in completions (388), breaking the tie he had been in with Rob Warchol (366, 2000-01), and yardage (4,319), surpassing Warchol's total of 4,113, last week.
Sophomore
Darius Kersey (Dover, N.J./Dover) leads the ground game with 10 carries for 36 yards.
Senior
Mick Paye (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) was the Pioneers' leader in receptions (39) and yardage (553) last fall, finding the end zone four times. This season, he has caught six passes for 108 yards, registering his fourth career 100-yard effort a week ago, and a touchdown. Sophomore wide receiver
Nickolas Burke (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) finished with four receptions, 50 yards and a touchdown during his first career appearance.
Junior linebacker
Ben Allen (Ventnor, N.J./Atlantic City), junior defensive back
Elijah DeGuzman (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) and senior linebacker
David Zurla (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) each finished with nine tackles to pace the WP defense at King's. DeGuzman forced a fumble and Allen posted 1.5 tackles for a loss (0.5 sack). Junior linebacker
Robert Prince (Howell, N.J./Absegami) added seven stops.
Senior wide receiver/punter
Julian Frazier (Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield), the Sept. 8 NJAC Special Teams Player of the Week, punted seven times for an average of 42.1 yards at King's, including two of 50+ yards (long of 64) and landing four inside the Monarchs' 20-yard line. He leads the NJAC and ranks 18th in Division III in punting average, and he also caught three passes for 36 yards and a touchdown during the victory.
Junior
Robert Sinegra (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls), an honorable-mention all-NJAC selection in 2011, is 3-for-3 on PATs this fall, and has not yet attempted a field goal.
William Paterson returned fice offensive starters and four defensive starters from a 2012 team that finished 5-5 overall and 2-5 in NJAC play. The Pioneers, who welcomed back 49 letterwinners and two all-conference selections, were predicted to finish sixth in the 2013 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
