GLASSBORO, N.J. – Fifth-seeded William Paterson (19-21) was eliminated from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Softball Tournament after suffering a 5-1 loss to sixth-seeded Kean (25-16-1) May 3.
The Cougars got on the board first during the bottom of the third inning. After two infield singles and a stolen base put runners on second and third with one out, Sandra Binkiewicz lined a two-run double down the left-field line and scored on a single from Courtney Yard to give Kean a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth, Kean loaded the bases with no outs, but senior
Kelsey Hand (Mountainville, N.Y./Cornwall) was able to induce a 1-2-3 double play to get the first two outs of the inning. However, singles from Jill Martin and Kelsey Hannan brought the score to 5-0.
WP got on the board during the top of the seventh. With one out, sophomore second baseman
Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) doubled to left field for the Pioneers' first hit of the game. After advancing to third on a groundout, Austin came home on an error by the third baseman, making the score 5-1. Yard was able to get a strikeout to end the inning and the game.
Kelly Moorehead and Hannan each collected two hits for the Cougars. Yard (16-12) earned the win, allowing one unearned run on one hit and striking out six batters in 7.0 innings.
Austin went 1-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Pioneers. Hand fell to 6-5 on the season, giving up five runs on 10 hits and striking out two in 5.2 innings. Sophomore
Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J. / North Arlington) allowed one hit in 0.1 inning of relief.
The Pioneers finish their season 19-21 overall and 10-8 in conference play.
