VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (8-14, 2-4 NJAC) dropped a pair against Ramapo (13-7, 4-2 NJAC) on April 6, losing game one, 3-0, and game two, 5-4 in eight innings.

GAME ONE
Senior pitcher Harley Marsiello (6-3) pitched a complete-game shutout as the Roadrunners won game one of the doubleheader by a 3-0 count.

After exchanging scoreless half innings, the Roadrunners climbed out in front during the top of the third with RBI-singles by junior Caitlin Smith and freshman Erin Witherspoon, giving them a 2-0 lead.

The Pioneers put runners on second and third with no outs in the fourth after Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) singled and sophomore Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) reached on an error, but Marsiello retired the next three Pioneers to keep the score at 2-0.

Ramapo put two runners on in the top of the sixth, but Austin put an end to the inning by starting a 4-3 double play off a sharply-hit ground ball, ending the threat and the inning with the score still 2-0.

Senior Janet Brown doubled and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt with one out in the seventh, and then scored when sophomore Jaclyn Lima reached on an error, giving Lima an RBI and Ramapo a 3-0 lead.

Marsiello finished off her complete-game shutout, retiring the final three batters in order.

Sophomore pitcher Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) dropped to 2-5 on the season despite going the distance, striking out four and giving up three earned runs.  Miele, along with sophomores Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) and Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany), accounted for the three hits for the Pioneers.

Lima and Smith both went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

GAME TWO
Masiello (7-3) picked up her second win of the day, pitching 2.1 innings in relief and striking out three to help Ramapo hold off William Paterson, 5-4 in eight innings.

Senior Lisa Orlando started off the scoring in the top of the second inning with a home run to left center, giving the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.

Mulderig ripped a one-out triple to center field in the bottom of the fourth. When a dropped third strike forced a throw to first to retire the hitter, Mulderig took advantage and raced home, beating the tag and evening the score at 1-1.

The Roadrunners put the pressure right back on during the top of the fifth inning, loading the bases with no outs.  Freshman pitcher Chelsea Batelli (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) took matters into her own hands, striking out the next two batters and forcing an easy groundout to second, stranding the runners.

Two errors to start the top of the sixth inning led to two runs for Ramapo, giving them a 3-1 lead.

Mulderig started a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth by doubling to center and then scoring on an RBI-single by freshman catcher Liz DeVenio (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) to cut the deficit to one run heading into the seventh.

Ramapo started things off in the top of the seventh with a pinch-hit single by Brown, who was then replaced by freshman Tess Sala as a pinch runner.  Sala stole second and then scored on an RBI-double by freshman Hannah Mucerino to give Ramapo a 4-2 lead going in to the bottom of the seventh frame.

Freshman Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./ Park Ridge) and the pinch hitter Rouse both singled, with Rouse advancing to second on a throw home to give the Pioneers runners on second and third with one out.  After a strikeout and with only one out remaining for the Pioneers, Miele evened things up at 4-4 with a double to left-center field.

Per the international tiebreaker rule, Ramapo started the top of the eighth with Smith on second.  She scored on an RBI-double to center by sophomore Kim LaPenta to give Ramapo a 5-4 lead.  Freshman Melanie Walling drilled a single to center, but the center fielder Wimmershoff threw a bullet home in time to retire LaPenta and keep it a one-run margin.

Mulderig started on second base in the bottom of the eighth and advanced to third, but was left stranded by the relief pitcher Masiello, who induced a fly out to right to end the game.

Batelli (4-6) pitched 8.0 innings, giving up only two earned runs while striking out six.  Mulderig went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and DeVenio went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

LaPenta went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Orlando and Murcino added one hit and one RBI apiece to the win.

The Pioneers will visit New Jersey City Tuesday, April 9, for a doubleheader to begin at 3:00 p.m.
