Softball to Open NJAC Tournament at No. 1 Montclair State Tuesday

Fifth-Seeded Pioneers to Play Second-Seeded Red Hawks at 4:00 p.m.

PITMAN, N.J. – Fifth-seeded William Paterson (19-19, 10-8 NJAC) will play at second-seeded and top-ranked Montclair State (37-3, 15-3 NJAC) in the opening round of the double-elimination New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Softball Tournament Tuesday, April 30, at 4:00 p.m. Live statistics will be available.

General Admission is $5.00. Students, children 12 and under, and senior citizens will be admitted for $2.00.

Top-seeded Rowan will host the remainder of the tournament Friday-Sunday, May 3-5.  The winner of Tuesday's WP/MSU game will play the winner of the No. 3 The College of New Jersey vs. No. 4 Richard Stockton first-round game on Friday, May 3, at 3:00 p.m.  The loser of Tuesday's WP/MSU contest will face the loser of the No. 6 Kean vs. No. 1 Rowan first-round game May 3 at 11:00 a.m. 

William Paterson is looking to win its fifth NJAC Tournament title (1999, 2003, 2005, 2009).  Earlier this season, the Pioneers split a doubleheader at No. 1 MSU, 3-4 and 4-1, on April 25.

The Pioneers are 19-19 overall and 10-8 in the NJAC following a 1-2, 7-3 split against visiting The College of New Jersey (25-11, 12-6 NJAC) April 27. 

Junior shortstop Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII), a first-team all-region and second-team all-conference pick a year ago, leads WP with a .360 batting average (fifth in league), a .447 on-base percentage (sixth in NJAC) and 27 RBI (tied-ninth in conference), is tied for the team lead with seven doubles and five triples (tied-first in league) and has scored 21 runs.  Sophomore outfielder Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) is hitting .344 with 14 runs scored, while senior outfielder Samantha Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) owns a .330 average, seven doubles, five triples (tied-first in NJAC), three home runs, 19 RBI and a team-best .610 slugging percentage (second in conference), 27 runs scored and nine stolen bases.

Freshman Chelsea Batelli (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) is 8-7 with a 2.54 ERA and a save in 16 starts (17 appearances).  Senior Kelsey Hand (Mountainville, N.Y./Cornwall Central) is 6-4 with a 2.68 ERA in 14 appearances (nine starts), while sophomore Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) owns a 5-8 record and a 2.66 ERA in 13 starts and 16 appearances, and is hitting .333 in 45 at-bats.

William Paterson was 30-12 overall and 12-6 in league play last season, qualifying for the 2012 NJAC Tournament.
