WAYNE, N.J. – Coach Hallie Cohen earned her 500th victory with the Pioneers as the William Paterson softball team (16-16, 8-6 NJAC) completed a 2-0, 4-2 sweep against visiting Rutgers-Camden (19-16, 2-12 NJAC) April 20.  With four regular-season league games remaining, the Pioneers are in a three-way tie for fourth place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) standings.  The top six teams will qualify for the double-elimination NJAC Tournament that begins Tuesday, April 30.

GAME ONE
Sophomore pitcher Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J. / North Arlington) threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout as the Pioneers took game one of the doubleheader, 2-0.

Senior outfielder Samantha Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) started things off by reaching on an error and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore outfielder Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany). Junior shortstop Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) drove in Mulderig with a one-out single up the middle to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead after one inning.

After exchanging zeros for three innings, the Pioneers added to their lead. Mulderig was again the rally starter, this time drawing a one-out walk and advancing to second on a fielder's choice. Miele ripped a two-out single to center to bring home Mulderig and put the Pioneers up 2-0 after five innings.

WP threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning, loading the bases after a single, a dropped third strike and a walk. Senior pitcher Ashleigh Johnson was able to escape the two-out jam, getting a fly out to right to end the inning with the score still 2-0.

Dys took care of the rest, retiring the Scarlet Raptors in order in the top of the seventh, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 victory.

Miele went 2-for-3 with two RBI at the plate, and Mulderig scored two runs in the win.  Dys (5-5) allowed just three hits in 7.0 shutout innings and struck out one batter to earn the win.

Senior outfielder Jackie Leafey went 2-for-3 for the Scarlet Raptors.  Johnson (11-7) took the loss, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and striking out three.

GAME TWO
William Paterson scored two runs in both the first and second innings on their way to defeating Rutgers-Camden 4-2 in game two.

The Pioneers got on the board during the bottom on the first inning.  Mulderig led off the inning with an infield single, stole second and advanced to third and scored on two wild pitches.  With one out, Miele walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground ball from senior designated player Nicole Walls (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) to give the Pioneers an early 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, sophomore second baseman Melissa Swain (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI) doubled, and sophomore pinch runner Lauren Bogart (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman third baseman Erika Tucker (Cream Ridge, N.J./New Egypt) then hit a ground ball to the third baseman who twice checked Bogart at third but never made a throw to first base; Tucker took second on the play.   Freshman pitcher Chelsea Batelli (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) walked, loading the bases with one out.  The Scarlet Raptors forced a fly out for the second out of the inning, but Laura Henriquez (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) lined a single to left field scoring the Pioneers' third run of the game.  Miele followed with a bases-loaded walk to increase the Pioneers' lead to 4-0.

Rutgers-Camden loaded the bases with two outs during the top of the third and scored a run on a single from senior Courtney Ray, but strong throws from freshman outfielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) and Miele threw Leafey out at the plate to prevent further damage.

A walk and double set up a one-out rally for the Scarlet Raptors in the seventh, but Rutgers-Camden was only able to push one run across before relief pitcher Dys recorded the final two outs of the game and clinched the 4-2 victory for the Pioneers.

Mulderig paced WP, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.  Batelli improved to 7-7 on the season, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out four in 6.1 innings.  Dys earned her first save of the season, throwing a perfect 0.2 innings.

Three players collected two hits each to lead the Scarlet Raptors.  Sam Shockey (7-7) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 6.0 innings.

William Paterson will travel to No. 1 Montclair State for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 23, at 3:00 p.m.
