GLASSBORO, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (6-10, 2-2 NJAC) was swept by No. 22 Rowan (19-3, 4-0 NJAC), 5-0 and 3-0, April 2.
GAME ONE
The Profs scored three runs in the third inning on their way to a 5-0 victory against WP.
The Pioneers threatened in the first, when
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) doubled but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a
Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) single.
Rowan got on the board in the bottom of the third, as three singles and a double plated three runs for the Profs.
They struck again in the fourth, putting runners on first and second with two outs before Jennifer Acrella doubled to left field for Rowan's fourth run of the afternoon.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Profs loaded the bases with one out, but
Kelsey Hand (Mountainville, N.Y./Cornwall) held them to only one run in the inning.
WP collected eight hits in the game, but couldn't push a run across.
Samantha Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Pioneers, and Arcella collected two hits for Rowan.
LeAnne Miller (11-2) threw 7.0 shutout innings and struck out 10 batters to earn the win for the Profs.
Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) allowed three runs on four hits in 2.1 innings, taking the loss (1-4). Hand threw 3.2 innings of relief, giving up two runs and striking out three batters.
GAME TWO
The Profs took advantage of two Pioneer errors and allowed only three hits as they defeated WP, 3-0.
Once again, the Pioneers threatened in the first. Miele walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Austin. Mulderig singled and
Liz DeVenio (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. However, the Profs were able to get the next two outs and prevent the Pioneers from scoring.
In the bottom of the inning, Shilah Snead reached on an error, stole third and crossed the plate on a fly ball to center field. Two singles and a second error allowed Rowan to score twice more for the only three runs of the game.
Miele, Mulderig and
Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) accounted for the Pioneers' three hits. Ashley DeYoung went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Profs.
Krysti Maronski (7-1) threw 7.0 shutout innings for Rowan, striking out four batters on her way to earning the win.
Chelsea Batelli (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) allowed three unearned runs in 6.0 innings, striking out two in the loss (3-4).
William Paterson will visit Stevens for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 4, at 3:00 p.m.
