NEWARK, N.J. – Sophomore designated player
Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) was a combined 6-for-7 at the plate, as the William Paterson softball team (6-8, 2-0 NJAC) swept Rutgers-Newark (5-11, 0-2 NJAC), 10-1 (6 inn.) and 10-0 (5 inn.), March 29.
GAME ONE
The Pioneers scored six runs in the second inning, as WP cruised past Rutgers-Newark, 10-1 in six innings.
Senior outfielder
Samantha Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) led off the top of the second with a triple and quickly scored on a single from Dys. After
Kelsey Hand (Mountainville, N.Y./Cornwall Central) flew out to center, sophomore catcher
Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) singled and advanced to second, setting up runners on second and third with one out. Three consecutive singles from
Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany), Tracy Geller (Commack, N.Y./Commack), and
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) plated three runs for the Pioneers, and a
Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) double scored another two.
The Scarlet Raiders scored a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, when Monica Bagan singled, stole second and scored on a Nicole Odell single.
WP added two more runs in the top of the third on back-to-back home runs from Dys and Hand.
In the top of the sixth, Miele doubled to left and scored when senior
Mandy Muraca (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) reached on an error. A
Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) pop-up to shortstop scored Muraca for the Pioneers' 10th run of the day.
Dys went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Odell had a hit and an RBI for Rutgers-Newark.
Hand (2-2) allowed one run on four hits, striking out six to earn the victory for the Pioneers. Liane Drastal (4-4) gave up eight runs on nine hits, taking the loss.
GAME TWO
Freshman pitcher
Chelsea Batelli (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) allowed only one hit as the Pioneers shut out the Scarlet Raiders, 10-0, in five innings.
After Wimmershoff singled and advanced to third on an error, Dys and Mulderig doubled, plating two runs for WP in the top of the first.
In the second, singles from Principe and Miele and a double from Austin scored two runs.
The Pioneers broke the game open in the bottom of the third. Dys led off the inning with a double and scored when Mulderig reached on an error. Freshman catcher
Liz DeVenio (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) singled through the left side, advancing Mulderig, who then scored on a sacrifice fly from Principe. After freshman third baseman
Erika Tucker (Cream Ridge, N.J./New Egypt) reached on an error, the Scarlet Raiders were able to throw out DeVenio at home. Miele lined a triple down the left-field line and Austin singled to left center, scoring three more runs for the Pioneers.
In the top of the fifth,
Laura Henriquez (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) singled up the middle, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Tucker. She then crossed the plate on a Miele single for the Pioneers 10th run of the game.
Miele paced William Paterson at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and two runs scored. Monica Liotto collected the only hit for Rutgers-Newark.
Batelli (3-3) struck out three batters in 5.0 innings, picking up the win. Brianna Alicchio (1-7) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits.
William Paterson will visit Rowan for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 2, at 3:00 p.m.
