WAYNE, N.J. – Junior guard Sandy Burgos (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) poured in a career-best 41 points as William Paterson (1-0) opened its 2013-14 men's basketball season with a 96-77 victory against visiting FDU-Florham (0-1) Nov. 15.

Burgos was 14-for-20 (.700) from the field, 4-for-6 (.667) from three-point range and 9-for-10 (.900) from the charity stripe, falling just six points shy of matching the WP single-game scoring record (47, Tommie Patterson, vs. Medgar Evers, 11/23/91). Senior guard Javae King-Gilchrist (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) posted 25 points, five assists and three steals during his Pioneer debut, and junior guard Jaques Conceicao (Massama-Lisboa, Portugal/Francais Charle Lepierre) contributed 11 tallies and a team-best seven rebounds.

Trailing 44-42 at halftime despite shooting 53.3 (16-30) percent from the floor, the Pioneers blew the game open with an 11-2 run early in the second period, expanding a two-point advantage (50-48, 16:46) into an 11-point margin three minutes later. After the Devils briefly cut it to eight at 64-56 with 11:48 remaining, King-Gilchrist sparked a 10-2 burst with his three-pointer, and WP's lead remained in the double digits for the remainder of the contest.

William Paterson finished 34-for-67 (.507) from the field overall, including a 59.1 (13-22) percent effort from beyond the arc. The 96 points were the most for WP in a regulation game since a 103-45 home victory against Rutgers-Camden nearly nine years ago (2/19/05).

Senior forward John Flete led five FDU-Florham scorers in double figures with 18 tallies. Classmate Will Green notched a double-double with 16 points and a game-best 11 rebounds.

William Paterson will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 19, at home against Lehman at 7:00 p.m.
