WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (21-6, 3-5 NJAC) celebrated Senior Night with a 3-0 victory against Ramapo (15-14, 4-4 NJAC) in the Pioneers' season finale Oct. 31.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 19-13 lead in the first set, but an 11-4 Roadrunner burst handed Ramapo a 24-23 edge. Back-to-back kills by freshman outside hitter
Mary Long (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) allowed WP to come away with a 26-24 opening victory.
Knotted at 15-15, the Pioneers scored 10 of the final 13 points for a 25-18 second-set win, and WP held off Ramapo for a decisive 25-23 victory.
Long led all players with 16 kills, adding eight digs, and freshman outside hitter
Erin Roach (Clark, N.J./Union County Vo-Tech) collected a match-best 16 digs. Junior setter
Danielle Koukos (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) contributed 30 assists, eight digs and three service aces, while junior middle hitter
Shauna VanDeRee (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) put down 14 kills. Junior outside hitter
Daniella Salemo (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) posted 13 digs, seven kills and three aces, and senior outside hitter
Amanda Morales (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) added three assists to her eight digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Cathryn Smart led Ramapo with 11 kills, sophomore libero Emily Harris contributed 12 digs and sophomore setter Kaitlin Mac Iver dished out 27 assists.
After the match, the Pioneers honored lone senior Morales.
